[ARCHIVED] Riverside Schools - Back to School Safety for Students Traveling to and from School

Stop Sign Stock Photo CROPPED

It is that time of year again where we will soon be seeing the familiar sight of school busses and children on the streets and sidewalks of our community.

Along with the children, another familiar sight will be our school crossing guards. These crossing guards work for the police department and their primary function is the safety of our schoolchildren. These employees work diligently in all weather conditions and are truly dedicated to the children and to their work.

Understandably when crossing guards are out in the mornings and afternoons it is often a busy time of day for others going to work or running errands. Even though it may be a slight inconvenience when they must stop and wait, we ask motorists to be patient and remember why the crossing guards are there.

Illinois law requires drivers to comply with school crossing guards.  Motorists must obey the instructions of any school crossing guard invested with authority to direct, control, or regulate traffic. If the school crossing guard is displaying a signal to stop, the driver of a vehicle on a roadway shall stop the vehicle at least 25 feet before reaching such school crossing guard. The driver shall not proceed until the school crossing guard indicates that traffic may proceed and until the driver can do so safely.

Any violations that are reported to the police department will be investigated and the motorist may be subject to receiving a citation for the first offense.

So, again, we ask motorists to be patient and courteous and work with the school crossing guards. If we all work together we can ensure another safe school year for our kids as they travel to and from school.

Information concerning traffic infractions or other crimes can be reported at any time by calling 9-1-1.
