Riverside drunk driving reduction idea gets national spotlight.
In the April, 2019 issue of International Association of Chiefs of Police Magazine, the Riverside Police Department was featured for their DUI reduction program through a partnership with the rideshare company, Lyft.
The International Association of Chiefs of Police Magazine (IACP) has over 130,000 subscribers and is available in 133 countries worldwide, in addition to the United States.
Riverside’s partnership with Lyft was highlighted on the "Spotlight" section of the magazine for their innovative, fresh approach to reduce impaired driving by giving coupons to individuals who may have had too much to drink.
Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel stated, "I am proud of the officers who brought the idea of partnering with Lyft to my attention. Our permanently assigned midnight officers routinely saw rideshare companies pick up what appeared to be individuals who were too intoxicated to drive home. That observation led the officers to approach me and ask if we could partner with a rideshare company. My role was to contact rideshare companies to see if any of them would partner with us, and Lyft immediately responded."
