[ARCHIVED] Sprinkling Restrictions

Garden-Irrigation

The ongoing hot, dry weather is taking a toll on vegetation throughout northern Illinois. According to Richard Hentschel of the University of Illinois Extension, a “lawn will naturally go dormant during hot summer months until cooler weather and rains return. While the lawn is dormant, and to keep from having dead grass in the fall, enough watering must be done to keep the plant crowns hydrated. This will not turn the lawn green yet will keep it alive.  About one-half inch of water every few weeks is enough.”

To ensure there is a sufficient supply of water for residents and businesses, please observe the following guidelines when watering your lawn, trees and plantings.

Sprinkling is only permitted between the hours of 6:00 – 10:00 a.m. or 6:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Residents with an even numbered address may water on even numbered days.

Residents with an odd numbered address may water on odd numbered days.

Let your lawn go dormant. Focus on keeping trees and other plants hydrated. For more information, please visit the U of I Extension website. Please remember that newly planted trees and shrubs require more water than established vegetation.

Please also refer to Section 8-6-13 of the Village of Riverside Municipal Code for detailed sprinkling restrictions.
