[ARCHIVED] Riverside Year End DUI Summary

Every 30 minutes, an American dies at the hands of an impaired driver. Riverside Police Department is continuing their efforts to arrest drunk drivers and keep motorists and pedestrians in the village safe.

The Police Department announced that in 2017, officers made 113 arrests for impaired driving. Most of the arrests occurred during the midnight shift and of those 113 DUI arrests; five were for aggravated felony DUI. An aggravated felony DUI arrest is considered a Class four Felony which carries a maximum sentence of not less than one year and not more than three years in prison.

Since 2008, Riverside officers have made a combined 1,107 DUI arrests. “Let our message be clear we will not tolerate impaired or reckless driving. Driving while impaired or recklessly endangers all people on Riverside roads and highways. If you drive impaired or reckless, you will be arrested. No excuses, no exceptions.” said Officer Brian Greenenwald.

“We are committed to getting the word out that driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is something we cannot afford to overlook in our community,” said Chief Tom Weitzel. “People who die in impaired-driving crashes are real people. They are our families, friends, and neighbors, and their deaths are preventable — they are not accidents”.

Of the 113 DUI’s made in 2017, 55 or 48.6% were refusals (refused to take breath test), the highest breath test (BAC) was .358, which is four times the legal limit and this arrest and breath test took place at 10:44 PM. The average of all breath and blood results for 2017 was .138.
