1. Is door to door solicitation allowed in Riverside?

Village Ordinance requires anyone soliciting in neighborhoods to obtain a permit from the Village office during regular business hours. Solicitors must follow the ordinance and respect requests to leave the property. For those interested in soliciting, fill out an application at the Village Office along with the $50 application fee and a valid form of government identification. Some exemptions are religious and charitable organizations.

Residents do not have to answer or open the door to solicitors. Do not let anyone into your house and do not give out personal information about yourself or your neighbors. If a solicitor refuses to leave, call 9-1-1.

2. How do I test to become a Riverside police officer?

Testing occurs every 2 years or as a list is exhausted. Our last published list was in July 2016. Applicant must be of good moral character, of temperate habits, sound health and physically able to perform the duties of the position for which they apply. The burden of establishing these qualifications rests upon the applicant. The applicant furnishes, along with an application:

• A copy of Military Service Record
• Discharge Papers
• Social Security card
• Birth Certificate
• High School Diploma/G.E.D. Certificate
• College/University Degree
• If requested, a copy of a certified transcript of course work from an accredited College/University

Helpful Tips

• Get a Law Enforcement internship through a college or university
• Get part time employment with a Police Department, perhaps as a community service officer, communications dispatcher or records clerk.

3. Why did I receive a parking ticket?

Many ordinances impact parking regulations, but the following are frequently cited:

• No parking on any village streets overnight 2 – 6 a.m.
• Expired meter (exempt weekends)
• No village tag/license displayed
• No parking permit (specified lots)
• Violated time limits.

4. How do I pay a ticket?

Visit the Jet Pay website to pay a ticket online. Pay at the Village Office, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. by credit card, or at the Police Department front desk 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday by check, cash, money order or cashier’s checks only.

5. How do I contest an ordinance violation or parking ticket?

You’ll be mailed a hearing notice listing the next hearing date at

You may attend the hearing or write a letter to the hearing officer and submit it by mail or drop it off at the Police Department to be heard on the hearing date. If you choose to write, you do not have to attend the hearing in person. In our note, list the ticket number and write out the same explanation that you would tell the hearing officer if you were there in person.

6. How do I know my court date?

On Traffic or Local Ordinance citations, misdemeanor or felony charges, the officer who handled the case on the day of the citing will notify you of the date and time. Direct other inquiries to:

7. What do I do if my parking ticket went to collections?

Call Municipal Collection Services at 708-613-2062.

8. How do I know when to go to court if I'm the victim of a crime?

Call the police non-emergency number at 708-447-2127 and ask the dispatcher for the officer handling your case.

9. Someone I care about got arrested and could not make bond. Can I visit them?

If the person already went to a Bond hearing and still could not make bond, they are likely at the Cook County Jail, which can be reached at 773-674-5225. If the person is still at Central lockup, there is no visitation unless you are the person’s attorney. Prisoners will never be at the Central lockup in excess of 72 hours. 10. How do I get a crash (accident) report?

Most crash reports are obtained by your insurance company. You must have the last name of involved party, date of birth of involved party and date of accident. You must also have one of either the vehicle Identification number (VIN), police report number or driver's license number of involved party. If you need an accident report, it is available for a $10 fee by internet only.

11. What do I do if my vehicle was towed?

For a crashed vehicle or abandoned or disabled vehicle, call 708-447-2127. For an underage driver after curfew, a fee of $500 applies. It must be reported to Police Department with proof of insurance, proof of ownership and a valid driver.

For a DUI arrest, a fee of $500 applies, or even possible vehicle seizure. 24, 48, or 72 hour holds are applicable by law and you must report to the Police Department with proof of insurance, proof of ownership and a valid driver. For other arrests, a fee of $500 applies or possible vehicle seizure may occur. You must report it to the Police Department with proof of insurance, proof of ownership and a valid driver's license.

Towing fees are over and beyond fees applied by Village ordinance and must be paid separately to the towing company.

12. How do I submit a crime tip?

13. How do I submit a Freedom of Information Act request and what are the guidelines?

Your request for records must be in writing. The Riverside Police Department doesn’t require the completion of a standard form. You may submit your written request by mail, fax, e-mail or by mail. Be as specific as possible describing the records you’re seeking. Remember, the FOIA is designed to allow you to inspect or receive copies of records, it is not designed to require a public body to answer questions. Tell us whether you would like copies or if you just wish to examine the records in person, you may do either. There’s no fee for up to 50 pages of standard paper copies; for pages beyond 50 and there is a 25 cent cost per-page charge.

You may ask for a waiver of copying fees. To do so, include the following statement in your written FOIA request: “I request a waiver of all fees associated with this request.” In addition, you must include a specific explanation as to why your request for information is in the public interest—not simply your personal interest—and why it merits a fee waiver. Include your name, preferred phone number, mailing address, and, if you wish, your e-mail address.

14. What do I need to do to pick up my property?

Found property owner may come in with valid identification. Call 708-447-2127, ext. 293 to make an appointment. Prisoner property owner or their designee may come in with valid identification. Mon - Fri 8:00am - 4:00pm

For property held for investigation or evidence, unless other arrangements are made, all property will be released by appointment only on weekdays from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m., excluding holidays. Property must be released by the Criminal Investigation Division before the owner can come to pick it up. Owners may call 708-447-2127, ext. 261 to inquire.

Firearms that come into the possession of the Police Department will only be released with a Court Order or a Writ of Replevin. The owner needs court order papers signed by a judge. Owners may call 708-447-2127, ext. 261 for more information.

15. How do I file a citizen complaint?

If you believe that the conduct of an employee was inappropriate, you may request to speak to a supervisor at the police station. This will result in the immediate investigation of your complaint. If you do not wish to make the complaint in person, you may obtain a Citizen/Internal Complaint form from any supervisor or at the front reception window at the public safety lobby, Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm. You will be provided with a fact sheet which will assist you in filing your complaint.

If you are unable to pick up a form in person, you may call our 24-hour number at 708-447-2127 to file a complaint or request the form be mailed to your home or you can

submit one online.

16. How do I file a thank you or a compliment?

If you wish to commend the actions of employees of this department, you may do so by writing a letter to the Chief of Police, verbal commendations may be given to any Department supervisor, or fill out a Compliment an Officer Form.

17. Does the police department offer fingerprinting?

Riverside Police Department offers fingerprinting for residents Mon - Fri, 8am - 4:00pm for the following purposes: licensing, job applications, background checks for employment. You will need to provide your own fingerprint card(s) for the fingerprinting.
